  • They are generally active all year and by day or night in cycles of activity and rest
  • Moles use their front limbs to construct tunnels with a fore-and-aft motion similar to a human swimming the breaststroke
  • Moles dig and use tunnels to travel. At the ends of tunnels, they dig special chambers that serve as bedrooms and birthing areas
  • Sometimes moles will live in a series of tunnels for generations before moving.
  • They eat mostly earthworms, and keep them alive and immobile by biting their heads, and then store them. The earthworms are stored in a chamber used as a “kitchen”.
  • Moles love earthworms, so much that they eat nearly their body weight worth of earthworms per day. They also consume other invertebrates, occasionally small mammals, succulent plant parts (roots, tubers, bulbs), seeds, and fungi
  • They mark their burrows with urine containing odorous
  • Typical moles will only infrequently go to the surface to gather nesting materials and seek water during drought
  • Moles live most of their lives alone and underground where they spend their time digging tunnels and hunting for food
  • Moles aren’t blind, but they are colorblind and can see light and movement only. They have acute senses of hearing and touch
